A valve comprises a valve plate 6 having disc faces 7 connected by a U- shaped bellows, the discs being moved into engagement with seats 5 by fluid pressure supplied to the interior of the valve plate. The fluid is fed through a pipe 17 extending across the plate and an outlet is positioned so that the fluid must flow across the plate whereby the plate is cooled in the valve closed position. Valves in the supply and outlet pipes are provided to prevent excess pressure and allow continuous flow. The casing may be cooled by fluid circulated through chambers 2.
