The method involves providing a drum (11) for receiving a traction unit (4). A drive unit (12) is provided for driving the drum, and a control unit (13) is provided for controlling the drive unit. The control unit sets a rotational speed based on a length of the traction unit that is furled on the drum. A cabin of a lift system (10) is moved for initializing the control unit in a primary position. An independent claim is also included for a lift system with a drum.
