Copolymers of ethylene with propylene and/or butene-1, with one or more further alpha-olefins containing at least 5 carbon atoms are made by employing a copolymerization catalyst consisting of one or more compounds of a transition metal and an organometallic compound of Group IA, II or III, of the Periodic Table by first mixing all or part of the alpha-olefin containing at least 5 carbon atoms with one or more of the catalyst components before the latter are contacted with ethylene, propylene, and/or butene-1. The polymerization is effected in liquid diluents. The alpha-olefin mixed with the catalyst components may be octene-1, dodecene-1, hexadecene-1, or mixtures, and the mixing is preferably effected between 40 and 150 DEG C. Many catalysts are mentioned, those exemplified are gamma TiCl3 + Al(C2H5)2(OC2H5), VOCl3 + aluminium isobutyl sesquichloride, gamma TiCl3 + Al(C10H19)3, and VCl4 reduce with Al(C2H5)2 Cl + Al(C2H5) Cl.
