The tool for joining two material layers, from which a material layer is formed as metallic material layer by a pin, comprises a driving device (6), and a welding device (7). The driving device is designed in addition to push the pin by the two material layers. The welding device is designed in addition to weld a first portion (8) of the pin with the metallic material layer after driving the pin. The first portion of the pin is present at a front end of the pin in a driving direction. The welding device conducts a welding current through the pin.
