The method involves detecting a wheel (2) of vehicle (1) by a radar sensor, and generating a super-positioned overall signal by the radar sensor from multiple scattering centers (SZ1 to SZ6) of the wheels. The overall signal is formed from a characteristic curve by scattering centers of reflected radar beam during rotation of the wheel. The overall signal is assigned to an evaluation unit. The wheel size is derived from a signature. A vehicle size, vehicle mass and type of vehicle are determined on the basis of the wheel size. An independent claim is included for a device for classification of vehicles.
