The system has an ignition voltage generator producing ignition voltage for a spark plug (7). A switching unit (9a) optionally operates an ignition coil (3a) in a charging state and a discharging state. Another switching unit (9b) optionally operates another ignition coil (3b) in the charging state and the discharging state, where the system is established in such a manner that the ignition coils are simultaneously displaced into the discharging state to fire an ignition spark. The ignition coils are displaced with each other in time and alternately displaced in the discharging state. The switching units are designed as switching transistors e.g. insulated gate bipolar transistors. An independent claim is also included for an ignition method for an ignition system of an internal combustion engine.
