The method involves detecting a temperature change valve which represents a change of a temperature of an element of an occupant protection device (200) and an air volume in a hollow body of the vehicle during the collision. The occupant protection device is arranged in the vehicle. The impact energy value is determined based on the temperature change value. The impact energy value is determined, if the temperature change value represents a change of the temperature which is greater that a predetermined threshold value. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) an occupant protection device; (2) a controller for executing an impact energy value determining method; and (3) a computer-program product with a program code.
