PURPOSE: A hydraulic tensioner is provided to improve rapidity of close of a valve of a check ball by suppressing disturbance of a check ball. CONSTITUTION: A crystal habit(151) of a retainer has a stroke regulation surface(152). The stroke regulation surface regulates an amount of stroke of a check ball(148). The stroke regulation surface is a concave surface in which a cross-sectional shape in a plane is a curve(153). The center of curvature(c) in a contact point with the check ball is a side in which a sheet surface(142) with respect to the stroke regulation surface is located. The center of curvature is located in an inner side in the diametric direction compared to the contact point or is located in a center line(L).
