The invention relates to an X-Y stage (1) for microscopes. Such an X-Y stage (1) comprises a base stage plate (2), an intermediate stage plate (4), and an upper stage element (7). The upper stage element (7) is displaceably mounted along a first axis (X) in a first guide in the intermediate stage plate (4), and the intermediate stage plate (4) is displaceably mounted along a second axis (Y) in a second guide (5) in the base stage plate (2), including an angle other than zero with the first axis (X). The X-Y stage (1) further comprises a mechanical stage drive comprising an upper stage element drive and a power takeoff coupled thereto, and an intermediate stage plate drive and a power takeoff coupled thereto. First coupling means are provided for coupling the upper stage element power takeoff to the upper stage element (7), by means of which the upper stage element (7) can be displaced along the first axis (X) in a first displacement direction as a function of the first drive direction, and second coupling means are provided for correspondingly coupling the intermediate stage plate (4) to the intermediate stage plate power takeoff. Such an X-Y stage (1) comprises first mechanical switching means for reversing the first displacement direction for a constant first drive direction and/or second mechanical switching means for reversing the second displacement direction for a constant second drive direction.
