A system for operating a power plant is provided and includes a grid configured to generate a normal load and an abnormal load, a turbomachine (10) configured to provide power to the grid in accordance with the normal load by firing at normal temperatures and in accordance with the abnormal load by firing at higher-than-normal temperatures, a cooling system (50) disposed to cool components of the turbomachine with fluid supplied by an external reservoir (53) and a controller configured to identify when the grid generates the abnormal load and to responsively operate the cooling system.
