PURPOSE: A multi-type air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to minimize a decrease of indoor temperature by minimizing a capacity decrease of a heat exchange unit which is actuated as an evaporator. CONSTITUTION: A multi-type air conditioner comprises a plurality of indoor units(21,22) and a plurality of outdoor units(11,12). The indoor units respectively include indoor heat exchangers. The outdoor units are connected to the indoor units and respectively include outdoor heat exchangers. Each outdoor heat exchanger includes a plurality of heat exchange units. The outdoor heat exchangers constituting the outdoor heat exchangers are successively defrosted when a defrost operation condition is satisfied during a heating operation.
