PURPOSE: A method for protecting a drive shaft when steering a vehicle rearwards is provided to reduce engine torque in acceleration during a full steering condition in reverse shifting, thereby minimizing the deformation of a chassis system in which various bushes are connected to one another. CONSTITUTION: A method for protecting a drive shaft when steering a vehicle rearwards includes: a step(S10) of determining the gear position of a transmission; a step(S20) of determining a steering angle in reverse shifting in the step(S10); a step(S30) of determining whether or not the engine RPM(Revolutions Per Minute) during a full steering condition in the step(S20) exceeds a predetermined RPM; a step(S40) of computing torque on the drive shaft when the engine RPM exceeds the predetermined RPM in the step(S30); a step(S50) of determining whether or not the computed torque in the step(S40) exceeds a limit torque; and a step(S60) of reducing engine torque when the computed torque exceeds the limit torque in the step(S50).
