PURPOSE: An internal combustion engine is provided to effectively control a refresh cycle of a diesel smoke filter according to an operation condition by using a low-pressure EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system and a high-pressure EGR system branched in the front and rear ends, respectively, of the diesel smoke filter. CONSTITUTION: An internal combustion engine comprises an exhaust line, a diesel smoke filter(100), a high-pressure EGR unit(120), a low-pressure EGR unit(110), and a control unit(130). Exhaust gas discharged from an engine passes through the exhaust line. The diesel smoke filter collects particulates included in the exhaust gas. The high-pressure EGR unit re-circulates the exhaust gas of the front end of the diesel smoke filter to an intake line. The low-pressure EGR unit re-circulates the exhaust gas of the rear end of the diesel smoke filter to the intake line. The control unit respectively controls the operation of the high-pressure and the low-pressure EGR units according to an operation condition(140) of the engine.
