There is disclosed a powered surgical handpiece, said handpiece including: a housing; an electric motor disposed in the housing, the motor having: a rotor; a lamination stack disposed around the rotor, the lamination tack formed from magnetizable material; and a winding assembly disposed between said lamination stack and said rotor, the winding assembly including a plurality of windings; an output drive shaft connected to the motor rotor to be rotated by the motor rotor, the output drive shaft having an elongated bore dimensioned to receive the shaft of a cutting accessory; and a coupling assembly disposed over the output drive shaft with locking elements tht extend into the shaft bore for engaging complementary retention features formed on the cutting accessory shaft so that when the locking elements are so engaged, the output drive shaft and the cutting accessory will rotate in unison; and characterized in that: the winding assembly wires are formed from coils of wire, the wire forming the individual coils having at least two opposed planar surface in cross sectional profile and being wound so that each said coil has side sections and a void space therebetween, the windings being arranged so the side sections of each winding are disposed within the void spaces on the windings on either side of the winding. |
