PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which is capable of properly reading an image by performing more accurate shading correction and is improved in productivity.

SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus comprises a CIS 301 and a roller 330. An original is conveyed between the CIS 301 and the roller 330 and read by the CIS 301. The roller 330 is a columnar body rotatable about a rotation shaft 335 and comprises an elliptical arc surface 331a. While changing the distance from the glass surface 301a of the CIS 301 to the elliptical arc surface 331a by rotating the roller 330, the reference surface of the elliptical arc surface 331a is read. On the basis of the read data, correction data corresponding to the read surface of the original, which is nearer to the CIS 301 than the reference surface, can be calculated and the shading correction can be performed using the correction data.
