During the compression stroke in a diesel engine, a minute fuel injection amount is injected into a cylinder from an injector in a manner such that the fuel injection finishes before the cylinder interior temperature reaches 750K. During the interval from when the temperature inside the cylinder reaches 750K until the same reaches 900K, the thermal energy amount which accompanies the combustion of fuel accumulates as low-temperature oxidation reaction energy. The thermal energy amount when all fuel in the minute fuel injection amount combusts is obtained as a total energy amount, and the ratio of the low-temperature oxidation reaction energy to the total energy amount is obtained as an energy ratio. This energy ratio is applied to a cetane number determination map, and the cetane number of the fuel is extracted from the cetane number determination map. |
