The engine has a piston guided into a cylinder and driven by a crankshaft (9). The piston consists of multiple segments (1, 2), where each piston segment is independently movable from a hub. A width controllable gap volume is formed between the crankshaft and the freely movable piston segment. A deflector is installed between a combustion chamber and the piston. A mechanical spring is provided between the piston segments, and pre-tensioned in a resting state between the piston segments such that the piston applies compression pressure without spring buckling.
