The present invention relates to a method and device for the scalable coding of an enhancement layer. The method for coding includes determining whether to use an expanded block mode, in which the largest coding unit (LCU) of the enhancement layer has an expanded size over that of the base layer depending on the difference in the definition between the layers, and has the same block structure as the base layer; and signaling whether to use the determined expanded block mode.
