<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid-discharge failure detecting apparatus capable of satisfactorily adjusting a light beam outputted from a light emitting element. <P>SOLUTION: In a liquid-discharge failure detecting apparatus, a light emitting element emits a light beam to a flying path of liquid droplets discharged from a nozzle; a light receiving element receives scattered light generated by a collision between the light beam and the flying liquid droplets; and waveform data are obtained according to variations in the light intensity of the scattered light (step S1). Next, the peak value of the waveform data is obtained (step S2).
