A shifting device for removing a spool of coiled strip from a rolling mill and replacing it by an empty spool comprises a motor-driven turntable 20 having provision for holding a wound spool 10 and an empty spool 10<SP>1</SP>. For changing a spool 10 the drive to the spool is uncoupled, the spool ejected by a cylinder operated lever 16 on to a track 19 and thence to the turntable when it is held by a lever 29, the table is turned through 180 degrees and an empty spool 10<SP>1</SP> ejected from the table to take up the position of the original spool. The turntable runs on a fixed circular track 24 (Fig. 3, not shown), a driven pinion 28 which meshes with teeth on the inside of the track giving the table its circular motion. |
