An approach is provided for enabling a web client(e.g., a web browser)to store binary data (e.g., map tile data, multimedia data, or a combination thereof) for offline use. Specifically, a web server converts the binary data to text data using a binary-to-text encoding algorithm. Optionally, other information (e.g., metadata, other data related to the binary data, etc.) is also associated with the text data prior to encoding or transmission from the web server to the web client. The web client then stores the text data in one or more data bases associated with the web client that can hold multiple tables or object stores. When an end-user requests the binary data, the web client separates the other data from the encoded binary files, decodes the text data with the binary-to-text decoding algorithm, and then displays the binary data on the web client. Optionally, the other information is also displayed along with the binary data.
|
