<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost negative electrode active material capable of improving the cycle characteristics of a lithium secondary battery. <P>SOLUTION: The negative electrode active material contains a metallic oxide represented by the formula: M<SB POS="POST">x</SB>O<SB POS="POST">y</SB>, where M represents a metal, or a metal represented by M; a polymer compound whose side chain includes an acid radical; and a carbon material.
