The box has a gear manually switched by a switch lever by a driver of a motor car. A support device (14) supports the driver during switching of the gear under exertion of support force directly on a switching element (16) of the gear box. The force exerted on the switching element by the support device is varied based on temperature. A pressure regulating valve of the support device varies pressure of the fluid, and is electrically actuated. The support device comprises a support element that is made of shape memory alloy. The support element is formed as a spring element. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a gear box for a motor vehicle i.e. commercial vehicle.
