Disclosed is an optical transport network (OTN) protection switching method, including: when it is determined that protection switching is required, compiling new automatic protection switching/protection communication channel (APS/PCC) overhead channel signalling in optical data unit (ODUk) overhead information and encoding an experiment channel (EXP) overhead value, and then emitting the ODUk overhead information having an encoded EXP overhead value; and judging whether a protection switching operation can be initiated according to the received APS/PCC overhead channel signalling and EXP overhead value, and if it is determined that protection switching can be initiated, performing the protection switching operation. Also at the same time disclosed is a transport device. The present invention can be employed to reduce the probability of error detection of new APS/PCC overhead channel signalling and improve the reliability of OTN protection switching.
