<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sidelight type backlight device of high luminance and excellent in light use efficiency, as well as a liquid crystal display and a television receiver. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight device includes a light guide plate for emitting light incident from a side face from an upper face, a board prepared on a side face of the light guide plate, wherein a plurality of upper-face light-emitting type LEDs are arranged, and an outer case for covering the light guide plate and the board.
