A piston ring (1) that has a sprayed coating (3) containing tungsten carbide and chromium carbide as a hard phase, and nickel as a metallic binder phase, and is characterized in that the sprayed coating (3) is formed by means of thermal spraying of thermal spray powders which are produced by using a granulation sintering method, said thermal spray powders containing hard particles for which the average grain size of the tungsten carbide has been adjusted in the range of 0.15µm to 0.45µm by means of a BET method.
