<p>The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:0999892/C2/1> wherein each of R and R1 is hydrogen, iodo or alkyl, B is hydrogen or alkyl, n is 0 to 3, and x is 2 or 3; and their pharmaceutically acceptable non-toxic acid addition salts; and their preparation by reacting a compound of formula <FORM:0999892/C2/2> with a compound of formula <FORM:0999892/C2/3> in an inert organic solvent. 4- (3 - Isopropyl - 4 - hydroxy - phenoxy) - 3,5 - diiodo - phenyl - acetic acid is prepared by reaction of ethyl 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxy-phenyl acetate and di-(2-isopropyl-methoxyphenyl)-iodonium sulphate (obtained from the bromide using silver sulphate) by refluxing in methanol with sodium methoxide, followed by refluxing the product with acetic and hydriodic acids. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the compounds I and their non-toxic acid addition salts together with pharmaceutical carriers. Oral administration of tablets, capsules, solutions and sustained release compositions is mentioned. The compounds lower cholesterol levels in the blood.
