A method of mass spectrometry comprises obtaining first data at a first time or location and second data at a second subsequent time or location, from which a future trend or rate of change in the data is predicted. An attenuation factor of an attenuation device or the transmission of ions is adjusted in response to the predicted future trend or rate of change in the data so as to maintain operation within the dynamic range of the detector system or prevent detector saturation. For example, the gain of an ion detector, the duty cycle of an ion deflector or a change in the fill time of an ion trap may be adjusted. The invention is applicable to predicting intensity variations with time (e.g. chromatographic applications) as well as predicting intensity variations in space (e.g. MALDI, DESI or LAESI imaging applications). |
