[Also in Division A4] A hinge for an adjustable seat back comprises two pivotally connected hinge members 2, 11, a first locking member 1 rigidly secured to the first hinge member 2 and formed with a system of bevel teeth 22<SP>1</SP>, and a second locking member 8 having complementary bevel teeth 22 and connected to the second hinge member 11 so as to rotate therewith, the member 8 being movable axially on a shaft 3 with which it has a splined or like connection to engage or disengage the member 1. The shaft is journalled in the member I and carries a pinion 4 meshing with a quadrant rack 14 secured to the hinge member 11 so that this hinge member rotates with a smaller angular velocity than the locking member 8. The member 8 has an annular groove 15 receiving the forked end 16 of a pivoted pin 19 rotatably mounted in the hinge member 2 and adapted to be turned by a handle 19<SP>1</SP>. The pin is biased by a torsion spring 20 in a direction to lock the bevel teeth of the members 1, 8 together. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the second locking member is slidably engaged with a bush rigidly secured to the shaft 3 and has a second, inner system of bevel teeth engaging corresponding teeth on the bush. In further embodiments the locking members are mounted on the pivot pin 12 of the hinge instead of on the parallel shaft 3, and the second hinge member may be rigidly secured to the pivot pin or freely rotatable thereon and connected to the second locking member through reduction gearing. The hinge is provided with a return spring, and a pair of hinges for the two sides of a seat back may be interconnected in the usual manner. |
