In a process for stretching a filament of linear polyamide the filament is fed off a leadin roller and is drawn on to a take-off roller rotating at a greater peripheral velocity, and the filament, while passing from the lead-in roller to the take-off roller, is passed around such a peripheral length of a heated stationary roll having an uneven surface of such a nature that the filament is first cold-stretched, is heated and is then hot-stretched. A rotatable guide roller around which the filament is guided may be arranged parallel to the heated roll so that the filament is not in contact with the entire periphery of the heating roll, the position of the guide roller being adjustable relative to the heated roll. The heated roll is suitably held at 115‹ C. The surface of the heated roll may be provided with pores by roughening, e.g. by sand-blasting and subsequent polishing or by matt chromium plating, or may be grooved or fluted, the grooves or fluting being parallel to the axis of the roll. Cold-stretching occurring before the filament is heated may be 1 : 3, and hot-stretching 1 : 1À7. Apparatus as shown comprises a rotating leadin roller 2 and associated guide roller 3, round which the filament 1 passes three or four times, stationary heating roll 4 and rotatable guide roller 5, round which the filament passes two or three times, and a rotating take-off roller 6 and associated guide roller 7, round which the filament passes several times. The zone between members 2 and 4 is thus a cold-stretching zone, and that between members 4 and 6 is a hot-stretching zone. Specification 806,532 is referred to.
