Aromatic perfluoro-olefines are produced by side chain defluoration of a perfluorophenyl compound of the formula C6F5-CF2-CF2-X, where X is a fluorine atom or an up to C4 perfluoro alkyl group, by heating said compound at elevated temperature in the presence of copper, nickel, iron, cobalt or steel, preferably at 450 DEG to 700 DEG C. or 600 DEG to 650 DEG C. The invention includes perfluorostyrene, per se, which may be produced by defluorinating perfluoraethyl benzene, according to the example in the vapour phase diluted with nitrogen gas at 600 DEG C. over steel "Dixon" (Registered Trade Mark) gauzes. The metal may be regenerated by reduction, e.g. with hydrogen. The product is stated to be identified by oxidation to pentafluorobenzoic acid.ALSO:The fluorides of copper, nickel, iron or cobalt are obtained by heating the metals in contact with an aromatic perfluoro - alkyl compound C6F5-CF2-CF2-X, where X is a fluorine atom or an up to C4 perfluoro-alkyl group, and preferably perfluoro-ethyl benzene, at preferably 450 DEG to 700 DEG C.
