The object cartridge 4 in an electron microscope is in two independent parts, namely a first part 5 which carries the object carrier 14 and the diaphragm 15 and which is inserted in the object table 7 and held at ambient temperature and a second surrounding part 6 which, as shown, carries the diaphragm 16, is attached to the lens system 3 by plastic heat insulating layers 9 and is held at a low temperature through a cooling rod 8 or, alternatively, through the cooled parts of the lens system, arranged to be superconductive; object carrier support wires or struts 12a, 12b allow pump communication to the space between the object carrier 14 and the diaphragm 15 or the object carrier may be attached to the first cartridge part by a wire mesh. In modifications the diaphragm 16 may be attached to the lens system 3 or its function taken over by the aperture diaphragm 21. In the latter case cartridge part 6 is extended to the vicinity of the diaphragm 21 or even beyond it to the position of the first intermediate image. The second cartridge part may be provided with a thermocouple and the object table 7 and the diaphragm slider 22 may be provided with heating devices. |
