A wireless device 100 has at least a first modem 210 and a second modem 220 and at least a first SIM 231 and a second SIM 232. The first modem 210 supports a different level of service than the second modem 220. A processing system of the wireless device selectively reconfigures the connection of the first modem 210 and the second modem 220 to the SIMs 231,232. In a first mapping configuration, the first SIM 231 is connected to the first modem 210 and the second SIM 232 is connected to the second modem 220. In a second mapping configuration, the second SIM 232 is disconnected from the second modem 220, and the first SIM 231 is disconnected from the first modem 210 and is connected to the second modem 220 thereby to obtain a different level of service for the first SIM 231 than in the first mapping configuration. Since not all communications require the services of a high-end modem, this arrangement enables a mix of high and low-end modems to be provided and dynamically mapped to SIMs dependent upon their required services, thereby reducing the cost of the wireless multi-SIM device.
