[Also in Division F4] A thermosetting film adhesive 10 utilized in manufacturing, e.g. a laminated metallic structure comprising a honeycomb core 16 to which plates 14 are to be bonded, has electric resistance heating wires 12 embedded in the film layers 10 for curing the adhesive. A variable resistor 22 controls current flow through the wires 12 to obtain the desired reading on a temperature indicator 21. Pressure is applied to the plates by weights or the like (not shown) or the structure may be mounted in an airtight enclosure, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) formed with at least one flexible sheet of material sealed to a support surface and connected to a vacuum source whereby the structure or a bulkhead within a tank is compressed by atmospheric pressure. In other embodiments, the adhesive is cured by utilizing either the honeycomb core itself as a resistance element, the plates 14 as heating elements, or through resistance elements embedded in the core and surrounded by electrically insulative adhesive material, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 respectively (not shown). |
