The machine has a safety device for detecting whether a person stands on a step when the step is set in a projecting step-on position. The safety device generates a signal so as to lock or unlock functions of the machine. The safety device is provided with an optical measuring apparatus and a measuring apparatus used for detecting a step-on load. An evaluation unit of the safety device receives a measuring signal from the measuring apparatus and detects whether the person stands on the step depending on the signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a food machine.
