The device has a signal processing device (13) accommodated in a housing. An actuatable switch element (17) is arranged at the housing. An anode terminal (A) of a LED (16) is connected to a positive pole of a battery (15). A cathode terminal (K) of the LED is connected to a terminal (21) of the signal processing device. The signal processing device includes a monitoring unit (25), which switches the terminal of the processing device when a battery voltage (U) exceeds a voltage limit such that the cathode terminal is connected with a negative pole of the battery. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a hearing device.
