[Also in Division B5] Compact dehydrating elements for use in sealed packages comprise as a desiccant, argillaceous earth, e.g. montmorillonite, silica gel, bentonite, calcium sulphate or synthetic aluminium silicate and as reinforcing material less than an equal weight of fibres of cellulose, asbestos or rock wool which are loosely and randomly distributed in the desiccant. If so desired a portion of the surface may be dyed with cobalt chloride to provide an indication of the condition of the dehydrating element. The elements may be in the form of circular discs (e.g. to form a force-fit in, or to be glued on to, a stopper for a tube) flat or curved plates, rods, or as illustrated, a spiral (Fig. 4) suitable as a retaining pad for pharmaceutical products. In Fig. 9 there is shown a hot press-filter in which may be formed the bodies or a sheet from which they may be cut. A paper mash or paste of liquid consistency may be mixed with argillaceous earth and placed at 54 between filter cloths 52, 56 and perforated plates 50, 58, the former of which forms the lower part of a rigid pan. Weights 60 are placed on the upper plate and hot air is passed through container 42. A vacuum pump may be applied to the pipe 68 connected to the apex of the collecting cone 62. The temperature may be increased slowly at first, from 50 ‹C. up to 150 ‹C. over a period of 36 hours. Fig. 10 shows a generally similar apparatus in which separate filters 70 are acted upon by a single press 72 to form the desired pellets or tablets directly. Further methods of forming the elements specified are (a) forming an aqueous paste of asbestos fibre and adsorbent substance, mixing by kneading, desiccating, crushing, partly humidifying and pelleting or tableting, (b) mixing asbestos and partly humidified argillaceous earth and pelleting under a pressure of 15 tons/pellet, and (c) casting a paste into a porous cardboard sleeve after drying as described in connection with Fig. 9 to a water content of 50% and cutting the bodies from the so-formed rod, or (d) extruding a paste produced as in (c) and obtaining plates or rods therefrom.
