Beverages comprise a cariostatic agent consisting of a water-soluble, bland-tasting phosphate ester of a polyhydric alcohol a cyclitol (an alicyclic polyhydric alcohol), a sugar or an oligo- or poly-saccharide, or a salt of such an ester, including mixtures of such esters or salts, and a carrier suitable for oral intake. Prepared ester salts are those of calcium, sodium and magnesium e.g. calcium sucrose phosphate, calcium lactose phosphate and calcium glucose phosphate. The beverage may contain liquid sugar and calcium sucrose phosphate.
