1,011,002. Whistles. ASTRONICS Inc. June 21, 1963 [July 9, 1962], No. 24683/63. Heading G5J. A sonic generator comprising a conduit 10 (Fig. 1) supplied with pressure gas and terminating in a nozzle 70 opposite a resonator 60 carried by a stem 44 coaxial with the conduit and nozzle is provided with a toroidal reflector 72 having a concave portion 74 and a convex portion 76 together with a lip portion 78 of spherical crosssection and lying in a flame intermediate the nozzle and the bevel edge 68 of the resonator. With this arrangement the gases G (Fig. 4) discharged from the resonator under the action of the incoming pressure gas flow around the aerodynamical contour of the reflector and do not impede the sound field S which is focused on the axis of the system just below the resonator. Additionally, a power gain of 75 to 100% is stated to be obtained with the arrangement of the present invention over known arrangements employing elliptical or dish-like reflectors which envelope the resonator (Fig. 3, not shown). The invention has application in fields such as spray drying, defoaming, cleaning, atomization. U.S.A. Specification 2,519,619 is referred to.
