A heat exchanger comprises a duct, preferably of square cross-section, for the passage of exhaust gases, and tubes for the passage of a heat exchange fluid, e.g. cooling-water, extending across the duct, in which expansion compensating means are provided in the walls of the duct extending longitudinally thereof. Referring to Fig. 1, a row of parallel straight tubes 1 extends between tube-plates 2a and 2b which form opposite sides of the square duct and a second row of tubes 3 extends similarly between tube plates 4a and 4b which form the other sides of the square, other rows of tubes being alternately arranged down the length of the duet. The tube plates are joined by U-shaped members 5 and the matrix is sealed inside a circular section shell 6 by sealing strips 17 with a diagonal of the square extending vertically, hence forming segmental chambers such as 9 and 10. The tube plates are connected to end plates such as 7 of the shell by flexible membranes 13, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the end plates are pierced by square apertures to allow for passage of the exhaust gases. Longitudinal bearer members 14a, 14b, 15a, 15b, 16a, 16b are attached to the shell by brackets (not shown) and in each row of tubes, as at 1a and 3a, tubes extend beyond the ends of the tube plates between these bearer members to support the tube assembly. The heat exchange liquid enters the chambers 9 and 10 via apertures 19 and 20 and leaves the heat exchanger through apertures 21 and 22 respectively. |
