A variator, for use especially in liquid-dispensing apparatus, can be pre-set to operate a total-cost register at a number of different unitcost rates. Any of these rates can be easily adjusted. Gears 70-80 on each of shafts 64, 65, 66, Figs. 4 and 6, are so arranged as to provide speed ratios ranging from 1 to 11 to take care of both decimal and sterling currency. A flow-meter drives the central shaft 65 according to the number of gallons delivered. Corresponding to each stack of gears 70-80 is a stack of levers 93 controlled by turrets 120-122. According to the number of blends of basic fuel and additive so there is an equal number of sides to each turret. Lugs 127 are displaceable to left or right in associated slots, Fig. 8, whereby the price of a blend can be adjusted. When a lug is displaced from normal position it permits its associated lever 93 to engage an idler gear 97 with the associated one of gears 70-80 and also a long gear 98, 101, 103 for the three denominations. The price per gallon set up on lugs 127 is visible in slots 142, Fig. 3, and is indicated on wheels 162, 164, 166. The gears 98, 101, 103 feed differential mechanism of appropriate ratios to drive the total cost register. The blend number is meanwhile displayed at window 141. In operation the attendant presses on knob 180, Fig. 7, to turn gear 173 so moving cam stacks 150, 151, 152, Fig. 6, to blank position and swinging levers 93 to inoperative condition. A locking pin 188 is withdrawn to permit the attendant to rotate knob 180 to indicate the desired blend, bevel gear 185 turning the turrets 120-122 appropriately. Release of knob 180 returns gear 173, whereupon the selected levers 93 establish the required variator drive and indicate the unit cost as previously described.
