In the extrusion of beryllium 12 the latter is provided with an external sheath 11 of soft steel electroplated with copper and an internal sheath 13 or a solid core. The internal sheath may be electroplated internally with copper. External sheath 11 has an end cap 11<SP>1</SP>. The beryllium workpiece 12 is machined from a bar drawn from a cast ingot or sintered billet, or it may be machined directly from a sintered billet. Composite billet 10 is heated in an argon atmosphere to 850-1000‹ C., placed over a slightly heated and lubricated mandrel in the container of an extrusion press heated to 450‹ C., and extruded into a tube. The sheaths and plating are later dissolved in a bath of nitric acid. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the composite billet has a solid core of cupro-nickel or manganese steel which is later removed by pulling. The final beryllium tube may have internal and external fins.
