The method involves determining whether a heat engine is to be turned on or off (300). An auxiliary network is supplied (302) by a low voltage battery when the heat engine is turned off, where the supplying operation is carried out without intervention of a high voltage/low voltage converter. A charge state of the battery is compared (304) with a preset minimal value of the charge state. The engine is maintained (306) in a turned off state when the charge state is higher than the value. The engine is turned on (308) to recharge the battery when the charge state is lower or equal to the value. An independent claim is also included for a hybrid car.
