Coloring keratin fibers comprises treating the fibers with (a) one or more orthodiphenol derivatives, (b) one or more cyclodextrins, (c) one or more metal salts, (d) optionally hydrogen peroxide or its generating system, (e) one or more (bi)carbonates, and (f) optionally one or more alkalizing agents different from (bi)carbonates. Independent claims are included for: (1) a composition comprising the components of (a)-(f); and (2) a multicompartment device containing 2-6 compartments comprising 2-6 compositions of (a)-(f), where the compositions are aqueous or pulverulent, and at least one of the compositions are aqueous.
