Disclosed is a composition for use in raising an immune response to P. gingivalis in a subject, the composition comprising an amount effective to raise an immune response of at least one antigenic or immunogenic portion of a polypeptide corresponding to accession number AAQ67118.1 (SEQ ID NO: 2), wherein the portion is not the full length polypeptide and comprises at least 10 contiguous amino acid residues substantially identical to 10 contiguous amino acid residues of said polypeptide. Also disclosed is the use of at least one antigenic or immunogenic portion of a polypeptide in the preparation of a medicament for preventing, inhibiting or treating periodontal disease in a subject, wherein the polypeptide corresponds to accession number AAQ67118.1 (SEQ ID NO: 2).
