The logger (1) has a sensor unit (4), a memory unit (6), a controlling and/or evaluation unit (5) and an interface (2) for exchanging data and/or for communicating with an external data processing system (3). The interface is designed as a multi-class interface, and applies interface classes (12a, 12b) to the logger during connection with the data processing system such that the logger is identified as a mass memory by one of the interface classes and identified as a communication apparatus for special evaluation and/or programming software (13) by another interface class.
