<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a touch panel system in which power consumption is reduced and detection sensitivity is improved, and further to provide a touch panel controller for controlling the touch panel system, and an operation method for the touch panel system. <P>SOLUTION: A touch panel system 1 includes: a state detecting unit 2 having plural state signal generating units SL and DL for generating state signals each indicating a proximity state of a pointer to detection areas; a position calculating unit 3 for processing the state signals to calculate a position of the pointer on a detection surface P composed by combining the detection areas; and an area setting unit 4 for setting a new effective area by updating an effective area set on the detection surface P on the basis of the pointer position calculated by the position calculating unit 3.
