The fuel pump (4) has a pump unit (5) for conveying fuel, having two delivery pistons (9) arranged in a cylinder (10). During operation of pump, fuel is sucked at suction side and emitted at pressure side (12). A cam assembly (15) drives a piston through external drive (2). The drive cam (16) of cam assembly is offset by 90[deg] to drive cam of other cam assembly, in circumferential direction. The cam assemblies have an additional cam arranged in circumferential direction between drive cams, for defining an intermediate stroke smaller than working stroke, for the respective pistons.
