A system includes a sensor, a processor, and an output module. The sensor can have at least one light emitter and at least one light detector. The processor can be coupled to the sensor and have instructions configured to determine a calibration value using light attenuation corresponding to a light path through a tissue associated with a light emitter and a light detector of the sensor. The processor can be configured to calculate oxygen saturation in the tissue using a signal provided by the sensor. The output module can be coupled to the processor and configured to render a compensated oxygen saturation. The compensated oxygen saturation can be determined using the calibration value and the calculated oxygen saturation.
