PURPOSE: An apparatus for measuring the volume of a powder layer is provided to detect the vertical displacement of a camera from an initial set position and to calculate the volume of the powder layer based on the vertical displacement of the camera. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for measuring the volume of a powder layer comprises a camera(21), a backlight(30), a transparent or semitransparent container, a lifting device(23), a control device(40), a displacement measuring device(42), an image analyzing device(41), and a calculating unit. The backlight is arranged in a position facing the camera. The container is arranged between the camera and the backlight. The lifting device vertically moves the camera. The displacement measuring device detects the vertical displacement of the camera from an initial set position set by the control device. The image analyzing device analyzes the images of the powder layer in the container. The calculating unit calculates the volume of the powder layer based on the vertical displacement of the camera.
